West Salem knocks off Grants Pass Nov 22, 2014 12:00 AM A A GRANTS PASS — West Salem knocked Grants Pass out of the Class 6A state football playoffs on Friday behind a strong running game. The Titans won 42-28 at Mel Ingram Field primarily on the strength of running back Kyle Terry and quarterback Cade Smith. Terry ran for 219 yards and two touchdowns, while Cade Smith earned 125 yards and two scores on 22 carries. Smith completed 11 of 18 passes for 214 yards and a 41-yard touchdown strike to Andy Armstrong in the first quarter. Grants Pass (11-1) trailed by two scores midway through the fourth quarter when running back Zac Hannan broke free for a 51-yard gain. Three plays later, a fumbled handoff by Grants Pass was kicked more than 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage, where a West Salem player recovered. The Titans (10-2) sealed the victory with the second of Terry’s scores, as the team took a 42-21 lead with 2:51 to go. Hannan led Grants Pass with 110 yards on 12 carries, and caught three passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns. Javan Appling went 10 of 21 passing for 230 yards. West Salem will play Tigard next Friday in the semifinals.
