Gonzalez spurs Phoenix to victory Prep girls basketball roundup MURPHY -- Sophomore point guard Maria Gonzalez came off Phoenix's bench to score 15 points Friday night and her defense ignited the Pirates' press in the second half of a 44-38 Skyline Conference girls basketball win over Hidden Valley. Gonzalez scored six straight points in the second quarter for the Pirates, including three straight layups off steals. She finished with six steals. "She turned the momentum of the game around," said Phoenix coach Kyle Walker of Gonzalez. "She picked their point guard three straight times in the second quarter. She has really blossomed all of a sudden." Gonzalez hit a key 3-point shot late in the game to keep the Pirates in control. Phoenix improved to 2-1 in the Skyline Conference and 5-6 overall. The Pirates will meet Lakeview today at 2 p.m. at Phoenix with a new starting point guard -- Gonzalez. "She deserves to start," said Walker. "She really sparked us. Mazama made 5 of 26 shots in the first half, gained a better touch in the third quarter and then sizzled in the fourth in outscoring the Cougars 19-5 to close out the contest. Dena Young had 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals to lead Mazama (6-6, 3-0 Skyline). Megan Britton added 11 points and six rebounds for the Vikings.
