But, nonetheless, the Class 3A Mustangs have handled their business so far, posting their second win of the season, 61-53 over Eagle Point on Thursday. Hidden Valley struggled from the free-throw line, nailing just 26 of 41, but managed to hold off a second-half charge by the 4A Eagles. "Free throws ... we just didn’t hit them," said Hayter, whose team missed eight foul shots in the second half after clanking seven over the first 16 minutes. "If we shoot just a little better there we would have been more comfortably ahead. And we turned the ball over too many times." The Mustangs (2-0), who routed Etna, Calif., 89-36, on Tuesday, were halfway home to another possible easy win after surging to a 36-23 lead at the half. Advertisement But Eagle Point, helped by Hidden Valley turnovers and missed free throws, slowly chipped away at the deficit before dropping its first game of the early season. "(Eagle Point) really stepped up their defense in the second half," said Hayter. "(Eagles’ coach) Keith (Williams) did a good job of getting them ready to play." Junior wing Jordan Hayter paced a balanced Hidden Valley scoring attack with 13 points. Seniors Nick Hayter and Josh Gotfried each chipped in with 11 points. Junior Derek Grieve led the Eagles (1-1) with 13 points, while Mychal Williams added 11 points. GRANTS PASS 60, SHELDON 50 — At Grants Pass, Jake Dastrup scored 19 points and connected on 6 of 7 attempts from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help Grants Pass open the season with a win. The Cavemen made 24 of 34 foul shots and were 10-for-11 from the stripe in the final period to pull away from a 43-all tie. Kevin Berg added 13 points, Brad Erbe 11 and Craig Dolmage nine in the victory. Jordan Inge had 21 points to pace Sheldon. NEW HOPE CHRISTIAN 61, MILO ACADEMY 54, OT — At Grants Pass, Billy Nelson picked the right time to heat up for New Hope Christian, dropping in two 3-pointers during a fourth- quarter rally and another in overtime to lead his team to the nonconference victory. Nelson finished with 11 points, while teammate Jon Allaire barely missed a triple double with 14 points, 16 rebounds and nine steals. Point guard Justin Fudge added 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for New Hope (2-0), and Michael Markvicka had 12 rebounds and nine points.
