Gas prices keep declining as expected Medford gas prices, perhaps spurred by the opening Safeway's new filling station on Stevens Street, have dipped nearly to $1.20 per gallon. At least one of the Albertson's gas stations was selling regular for $1.239 on Thursday, while Costco was selling for a little over $1.20 per gallon. According to AAA figures, Oregon continues to have the highest average price in the continental United States at just under $1.38 a gallon-34 cents a gallon less than a year ago. But, as consumers have found, some stations are selling gasoline at prices well below the statewide average. Eugene-Springfield had the lowest average price in Oregon this week at $1.246. The listed Medford/Ashland average was $1.344. As forecast a week ago, the post-Thanksgiving holiday average gasoline prices continued downward. Some analysts say the national average could drop to as little as a dollar a gallon by Christmas. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded stands at $1.14. In Georgia, however, the statewide average is at 97-and-a-half cents, the lowest in the country. Oil industry analysts say the reasons for the lower prices are slow economic conditions and an unwillingness of non-OPEC nations to go along with an OPEC reduction in oil production, which keeps crude oil prices in the $18-per-barrel range.
