Eleanor McCabe Cooney Friday Jan 6, 2017 at 2:00 AM September 7, 1930 - January 3, 2017 Eleanor McCabe Cooney passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017 after a lengthy battle with lung cancer in her home at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Oregon. The eldest daughter of John and Marion McCabe, she was born September 7, 1930 in Dickinson, North Dakota. Eleanor moved to Medford in 1940. She was a student at the Visitation Convent Grammar School in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduated from Medford High School, and attended Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois. She married John P. Cooney January 5, 1952 in Medford and was a homemaker and stay-at-home mother to their five children. Eleanor was an active member of the Colony Club and a longtime member of the Medford Junior Service League, the Rogue Valley Country Club, and multiple bridge groups. She was an avid reader who enjoyed worldwide travel with her husband. Eleanor is survived by her immediate family: her husband of 65 years, retired Federal Magistrate Judge John P. Cooney; their children, Cathy (Bill) Copenhaver of Salem, Ore., Martha (Niles) Woods of Anchorage, Alaska, Stephen Cooney of Larchmont, New York, John Cooney of Portland, Ore., and Emily (Greg) Redinbo of Lake Oswego, Ore.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her sister, Sylvia Wade of Medford, Ore. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Stephen McCabe. A funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Medford's Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Reception to follow in the Rogue Room, the Plaza, at the Rogue Valley Manor.
