The Panthers squandered a 4-0 lead against Roseburg in Southern Oregon Conference baseball Tuesday, but still managed a 5-4 victory over the Indians at Legion Field. South Medford (5-4 overall, 3-0 SOC) lost three one-run, early-season, non-conference games, but have reversed fortunes in league play. With the win over Roseburg (4-3, 0-3 SOC) in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, two of the three Panthers’ conference victories have been by one run. The nightcap was rained out with the Panthers leading 1-0 in the first inning. The game has been rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. today in Roseburg. "It would have been easy after Roseburg tied it to have given up," South Medford coach Steve Antich said. "But all year long we have finished strong and battled back." After the Indians tied the game at 4-all in the bottom of the sixth, South responded by scoring the winning run in the seventh. Corey O’Neill got the rally started with a leadoff single and Dan Chancler followed with a walk. After Andy Narus lined out to third, Jeremy Frantz delivered an RBI single. Tyler Heil, who struggled when relieving starting pitcher Tim Holtz during Roseburg’s three-run sixth, picked up his second win in two conference decisions by not allowing the Indians to score in their final at-bat. Heil walked Nick Waechter to open the bottom of the seventh. But the sophomore right-hander retired the next three batters to leave the potential tying run stranded on third to end the game. Holtz looked strong in blanking the Indians on two-hits through the first four innings. Holtz surrendered three hits in giving up one run in the fourth, then was pulled with one out in the sixth with two runners on base. "He (Holtz) worked ahead of the count and had good control of all his pitches until he ran out of gas," said Antich. "He put us in position to win." South picked up a run in the first when Frantz reached on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Panthers added three more in the third on an RBI double by Chancler and run-scoring singles from Narus and Holtz. "That’s how you become battle-tested — going on the road and pulling out a victory in the seventh against a team like Roseburg," said Antich. NORTH MEDFORD 10, EAGLE POINT 0 — Travis Glass tossed a one-hit shutout as top-ranked North Medford (10-1, 4-0 SOC) cruised to a five-inning, non-conference win that was stopped due to the 10-run mercy rule. Glass (2-0) forced 10 ground-ball outs and limited his outing to 54 pitches, while the offense took advantage of eight Eagle Point walks during an eight-run third inning. Ryan Augino had the lone hit for the Eagles with two outs in the fifth. Brett Timmerman belted his second home run of the season — a solo shot in the fourth inning — while Russ Vandell and Reese Lamson each went 2-for-2 at the plate. Hammond, a senior right fielder, scored Andrew Norum from second. Norum reached base on a single, then advanced on Sean Teaters’ hit. Norum was 2-for-2 for Crater (3-4, 1-3 SOC) as was Gary Miller. Softball KLAMATH UNION 2-7, EAGLE POINT 0-5 — At Klamath Falls, Krystin Brooks led the Eagles with three hits and scored a run in Game 2 as Eagle Point slipped to 0-4 in Southern Oregon Conference action. Eagle Point senior Jamie Williams struck out seven in the second game and had an RBI single. KU’s Tabatha Cook hit a second-inning home run for the first run of Game 1.
