Rum Creek Fire not contained, others in Rogue Valley are By Kevin Opsahl Updated: Aug 20, 2022 08:40 AM A A Firefighters were holding the line on most fires burning in Jackson and Josephine counties as of Saturday morning, but reinforcement is needed in some places. [Oregon Department of Forestry photo] The Rum Creek Fire north of Galice, where a firefighter from Talent was killed on Thursday, is not contained and has spread to 60 acres. The Oregon Department of Forestry-Southwest Oregon District shared those developments in a news release late Friday, before a Saturday update was expected. As for the Rum Creek blaze, “air tankers and helicopters spent much of the day holding it in check while crews worked on establishing contingency lines away from the edge of the fire’s perimeter,” the department’s Friday release said. The difficulty in containing the disaster is what caused incident commanders to call in a Type 2 Incident Management Team, meant to “alleviate pressure on local crews and free up resources for any new fire starts. This team will be briefed today before taking control Sunday. Meanwhile, fires within the Westside Complex on Tallowbox Mountain south of Applegate are “lined and in full mop-up,” including Keeler and Ladybug Gulch, the news release said. Both fires could be completed by Saturday afternoon. The latest developments came just hours after Logan Taylor, 25, of Talent was identified Friday as the firefighter who died Thursday after being hit by a tree while battling the Rum Creek Fire. Crews have been battling fires in Jackson and Josephine counties since Wednesday’s lightning storm. The National Weather Service estimated the storm consisted of 230 lightning strikes, causing more than 50 fires with the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Southwest Oregon District.
