Pirates nab third at Willamette tourney EUGENE -- The Phoenix wrestling team took third-place Saturday out of 18 teams at the Willamette Invitational. The Pirates took 13 wrestlers, sending three to the finals and coming away with two individual champions. Tyler McCarty pinned Churchill's Chris Helmstedt in 3:07 in the 130-pound finals, while Kyle Kaufman defeated Andy Pickett of McKay, 11-5, at 140. Bryon Monical also made a run to the finals but was decisioned by McKay's Derek Bollyer, 3-0, at 145. Jesse Clark (119) and Greg Brown (189) each took fourth. Clark had to forfeit third-place to Mike Torrez of Dayton because of match limitations, while Brown took fourth when North Valley's Brendan McLean defaulted. Shawn Ferrell grabbed fifth at 171 by defeating Cottage Grove's Seth Wedgy, 8-6 and Nick Acord tied for sixth with Cottage Groves' Cody Deaton. "We Wrestled pretty well, overall," said Phoenix coach Harry Mondale. "We left five starters at home but still managed to do well as a team. We are not quite where we want to be but we still have time to get there. The kids are getting better each week." Overall, the Pirates grabbed third-place with 128 points. Thurston took team honors with 177 points while Churchill finished second with 154. McKay's 124 points were good enough for fourth while North Salem finished fifth with 119. Mondale was also pleased with the performance of his younger wrestlers who competed in a novice tournament in Willamette. "You are going to have to depend on some younger kids when it comes time for the District Tournament," said Mondale. "We had six or seven champions in the novice tournament, so that is very pleasing to me. We'll need them." Phoenix travels to Hidden Valley on Thursday for a Skyline Conference dual meet with the Mustangs and Lakeview at 5:30 p.m. TEAM RESULTS -- 1, Thurston 177; 2, Churchill 154; 3, Phoenix 128; 4, McKay 124; 5, North Salem 119.
