PREP SOFTBALL Roseburg's Martin handcuffs Black Tornado Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 6, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Apr. 6, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News No doubt, it was Ashley Martin’s day for the Roseburg Indians on Tuesday. The senior pitcher limited host North Medford to four singles and blasted the game-winning home run as the Indians defeated the Black Tornado, 2-1, in Southwestern Conference softball at North Medford High. Martin struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk. North’s lone run was unearned. North pitcher Sarah Thomas also pitched effectively, allowing five hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. “Both kids threw really well,” North Medford coach Mike Mayben said. “You have to give all the credit to their kid (Martin). She kept us off balance. She throws hard and overpowered us.” Martin gave the Indians (4-1, 3-1 SWC) a 2-0 lead in the sixth when she homered over the left field fence. “(Thomas) did a great job hitting her spots,” said Mayben. “Even the home run was not a bad pitch. It was up in the zone and Martin did a great job hitting it. She’s a strong kid and has some pop in her bat.” The Black Tornado finally broke through when Mahal Miles reached on an error to open the seventh. Miles moved to third with two outs and scored on an infield single by Olivia Lethlean before Martin induced a game-ending groundout by Taelor Mayben. “We competed well,” said Mayben. “The only thing we didn’t do was make the adjustments at the plate. It was one of those games you love being part of.” Roseburg;001;001;0;—;2;5;2 North Medford;000;000;1;—;1;4;2 Martin and Berman; Thomas and Kucera. W — Martin. L — Thomas. HR — R: Martin.
