Construction of New Bicycle Lanes as Part of Roadw ay Improvements
A num ber of bicy cle facility improvem ents will be constructed as part of the street improvem ents
(including new construction and str eet reconstruction projects) that are described in Chapter 5 and
illustrated in Figure F-1. In addition to the percent
of arterial and collector streets that currently have
bicycle lanes, the planned/ program med
improvem ents identified in Figure F-1 will cover
another 26 percent of the arterial and m ajor
collector street sy stem , bringing the total coverage
to about 68 percent. 100 percent coverage of
arterial and collector streets would contribute to an
ideal bicy cling environm ent, but this goal is
probably not feasible due to lack of right-of-way ,
built or natural environm ental impacts,
extraordinarily high costs, the priority need for on-
street parking, or other factors.
Retrofitting Bicycle Lanes onto Existing Streets
Beyond the bicy cle sy stem improvem ents that will be constructed as part of a street improvem ent project,
other im provem ents are will be m ade through retrofitting the existing street system . The improvem ents
are intended to address the strategic approach to providing im proved bicy cle circulation in Medford that
was discussed in the section on “Strategies”. They are also intended to m eet State, regional, and local
goals and requirem ents for bicy cle sy stem enhancem ents that were discussed earlier in this under “Policy
Context and Background”. Figure 10-1 illustrates th e bicy cle facility improvem ents, and Table 10-5
provides a detailed list of the sam e projects. If fully implem ented, the bicy cle facilities will result in a
coverage of 88 percent of Medford’ s arterial and coll ector street sy stem . This would exceed Medford’ s
share of the RTP Alternative Measures goal of 60 percent for the RVMPO region.
