Raiders knock off Albertson ASHLAND -- The Southern Oregon volleyball team used a balanced attack to tip Albertson in straight games Friday at McNeal Pavilion, setting up a first-place Cascade Conference showdown tonight with sixth-ranked Northwest Nazarene. The Raiders (12-2, 3-0) won their sixth consecutive match and snapped a four-match drought against the Coyotes with Friday's 15-8, 15-9, 16-14 triumph. Sophomore outside hitter Shelley Gorin notched eight of her team-high 16 kills while leading SOU in the first game. In the second game, the Coyotes (5-5, 2-1) raced to a 9-3 lead before the Raiders went on an 11-0 run in which junior middle blocker Beth Stidham accounted for three of the final five points. Monica Fisher staved off game point with a key sideout in the third game, then sealed the match with a smash down the middle. Including Gorin, four Raiders finished in double-digits for kills. Fisher had 13, Stidham had 10 and junior outside hitter Kristina Wurtz added 10 kills and a team-high 15 digs. "It wasn't our best performance, but we did what it took to come back," Raider coach Paul Elliott said. "It was a struggle. Albertson's is a very talented team, and I'm just glad they haven't pulled it all together yet." Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, OR U.S.A.
