Several other Raiders did not qualify as the meet continues today and ends Saturday. The men’s 4x800 quartet had the most impressive showing, placing fourth in its heat sixth overall with a school-record time of 7:38.55. The foursome of freshman Trevor Palmer, freshman Jeff Olsen, senior Dusty Waugh and junior Sean Peterson demolished the previous record of 7:45, set earlier this year. "They’re the sixth-place team right now," said SOU coach Mike Jones. "If they can hold that position, they’ll be All- Americans." Advertisement Peterson was the only men’s individual to advance, placing 10th among the 12 to qualify for the 1,500 finals with a time of 3:56.00. Palmer ran 4:03.23 and placed 17th. Megan Heuberger led the Raider women’s squad, advancing in the 400 intermediate hurdles with a mark of 1:03.28, good for fifth fastest. Brynn Cogdill grabbed the final spot in 1,500 qualifying, placing 12th in 4:45.82. In the 100, where 18 runners advanced to the semifinals, Andrea Eide was 18th in 12:20, just .03 off her school record. Raiders who didn’t advance were Trevor Palmer, 17th in the 1,500; Tyler Nitzke, 23rd in the 400 in 48.80; and Bart Maney, 31st in the 100 in 10.97. Softball RAY HONORED — Southern Oregon University junior shortstop Kara Ray Thursday became only the second Raider softball player ever to receive NAIA All-American recognition. The Central Point native and former Crater High all-star garnered honorable mention All-American honors after leading the Cascade Conference in batting average (.406) and setting school season records with league-leading totals for hits (71) and runs (45). The Wichita State University transfer also broke a school record for stolen bases (31). Ray helped the 40-12 Raiders win a conference title for the second consecutive season, and SOU advanced to the NAIA Region I tournament finals before falling to eventual national runner-up Simon Fraser University. Ray joins former SOU pitching standout Brandi Brown as the school’s lone All-American honoree.
