Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 27, 2006 Athlete of the Week Every team needs a shoulder to lean on now and then, and the top-ranked South Medford boys basketball team is no different. Needing an inside presence to help thwart third-ranked Jefferson last Saturday, South Medford senior Brent Johnson stepped to the forefront to in an 80-69 road victory. Johnson, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound center, tallied 19 points and 13 rebounds and was instrumental in helping South limit Jefferson’s potent offense. The Democrats entered the game averaging almost 84 points per contest and had reached the century mark three times. Against South, Jefferson was 6-for-34 from 3-point range and found little room to roam in the paint. Demos center Markhuri Sanders-Frison, a 6-8 senior, was held scoreless by Johnson. The night before, Johnson scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Panthers to a 78-35 victory over Ashland. On Tuesday, Johnson kept Roseburg center Eric Thompson at bay long enough for the Panthers to claim a comfortable lead en route to a 95-64 victory on Tuesday. Thompson, who entered the contest as the state’s second-leading scorer at 25.3 points per game, was held to two points in the first half as South opened a 49-24 lead at intermission. Thompson finished with 17 points. Entering tonight’s game at Crater, Johnson is averaging 11 points and 7.3 rebounds for South (15-1, 6-0 SOC), and is tied for second on the team with 48 assists.
