OLCC inspector Janet Bailey said it was "disappointing" to see workers at 15 of the businesses agree to sell alcohol to a minor who volunteered to go into stores, restaurants and bars and try to purchase liquor last Friday and Saturday. "It was a little higher than usual," Bailey said of the percentage of businesses who sold to the "decoy" volunteer. Ordinarily, between 25 and 30 percent of licensees fail random compliance checks, Bailey said. Businesses that sell alcohol to minors could be fined or have their permits suspended. Store clerks are cited into court and face $350 fines. The sheriff’s department chose the stores it wanted checked. Sheriff’s Capt. Joe Puckett said the focus of the sting was on businesses in rural parts of the county that had not been checked recently for compliance with state alcohol laws. "We know that in the summer months, there is an increase in the number of minors trying to purchase alcohol," Puckett said. "We wanted to raise awareness early on in the season." The following businesses sold alcohol to an underage decoy: Bi-Mor in Central Point; Flying Eagle Market in Eagle Point; Lost Creek Marina in Trail; Cascade Gorge Store in Prospect; Shady Cove Chevron; Rainey’s Corner Market in White City; Bi-Mor in White City; Triple Tree in Central Point; White City Chevron; Applegate Store; 7-Eleven at 3960 S. Pacific Highway, Medford; West Hills Country Store in Central Point; G&B Market in Central Point; Bobbio’s Pizza in White City; and Stop ’N Go Market in White City. The following businesses refused to sell alcohol to an underage decoy: 4 Corners Market in Central Point; Willie’s Tavern in Eagle Point; John’s Trail Market; Sunset on the Rogue in Trail; Pat’s Hand Tied Flies in Trail; Prospect Cafe and Trophy Room; The Wanigan in Prospect; Shady Cove Market; Gold Hill Tavern; Longbranch Saloon in Gold Hill; Whiskey River Cafe and Lounge in Central Point; Provolt Store; J-Ville Tavern in Jacksonville; Stage Stop Store in Medford; Ray’s Food Place in Phoenix; Quick Shop Market in Talent; Mr. C’s Market in Ashland; Maverick’s in Ashland; Foodland in White City; Purple Parrot in White City; and Country Store in Medford. Underage volunteers carry their own legal identifications and are not to disguise their age. The OLCC tests about 1,000 businesses with liquor licenses annually.
