Gerardo Flores-Zambrano of Rochester pleaded guilty to possession of more than 500 grams of meth with intent to distribute under a plea petition filed Monday in the U.S. District Court in Medford.  Flores-Zambrano, 44, was arrested along with Jaime Peña-Gallegas, 27, of Centralia, after an Oregon State Police trooper pulled over the Honda Accord Peña-Gallegas was driving Dec. 29, 2014, near milepost 29. According to an affidavit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court, the trooper, who had clocked the car going 11 miles over the speed limit, grew suspicious when Peña-Gallegas and Flores-Zambrano gave conflicting stories about where they were heading. Those suspicions were heightened by Peña-Gallegas' inability to produce a driver's license, the affidavit said. A search of the car later turned up a package of meth under the front passenger seat, and Flores-Zambrano allegedly told the trooper there were 11 more in the trunk. Court documents said the total amount of drugs seized weighed out to 14.67 pounds. Local OSP troopers seized more than 55 pounds of methamphetamine and almost 5 pounds of heroin in April and May of this year following three separate, unrelated traffic stops on I-5, which police have said acts as the state's main drug-trafficking corridor. Both Flores-Zambrano and Peña-Gallegas were indicted by a Jackson County grand jury on charges of possession, delivery and manufacture, but county prosecutors ultimately dismissed the charges in light of a federal indictment handed down Feb. 5. Court documents show Flores-Zambrano faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison under federal guidelines. Peña-Gallegas previously pleaded guilty in June to the same charge and faces a similar sentence. Flores-Zambrano's sentencing is set for Nov. 17, while Peña-Gallegas' has been scheduled for Sept. 23.
