Brophy pitches one-hitter to boost St. Mary's Lani Brophy couldn't have done much more to help St. Mary's win the first game of a District 6 softball doubleheader against Lost River Saturday. The junior pitcher tossed a one-hit shutout and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Crusaders defeated the Raiders 1-0 to open district play. Lost River rebounded to gain a split with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap at the Crusaders' field. Brophy struck out 13 and didn't issue a walk in the opener. She took a no-hitter into the seventh, but was touched for a single to open the inning. "She had everything going," St. Mary's coach Robin Snider said. "She overpowered them. This is definitely one of her best games this season." Brophy accounted for the game's only run when she reached base on an error to open the seventh. A passed ball and sacrifice bunt advanced her to third, then she scored on Kim Hansen's one-out grounder to second. The Raiders tried for the putout at home, but Brophy beat the throw. "When Lani got on third, she definitely was ready to score," said Snider. "Kim did her job getting the ball in play. She came through when we needed her to." Lost River jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second game off sophomore pitcher Sarah Fetty. The Raiders scored five runs in the second inning off two hits, two walks and an error. Only three of the runs were earned. Brophy finished off the final 5 innings in shutout fashion, allowing one hit and striking out three. St. Mary's (9-2, 1-1 Dist. 6) cut the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the second when Hansen reached on an error and scored on Jessica Folger's double. Folger eventually scored on an error. Fetty accounted for two of the Crusaders' four hits with a double and triple.
