Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 24, 2015 at 11:00 PM Updated Sep 25, 2015 at 9:20 AM Posted Sep. 24, 2015 at 11:00 PM Updated Sep 25, 2015 at 9:20 AM » Social News Sept. 24, 1915 ELKS DEDICATE COSTLY BUILDING AS NEW HOME With the streets gaily decorated in lodge colors and electrically illuminated at night, in possession of the freedom of the city, the visiting and local Elks are enjoying themselves today with auto excursions through the valley and social entertainments, following the formal dedication of the building Thursday evening before the assembled Elkdom of southern Oregon. This afternoon the State Elks' Reunion association will be organized. Tonight there is a special entertainment for Elk ladies at the Star theater, while the Elks will participate in a stag vaudeville entertainment and venison banquet. Close to a thousand Elks and their ladies filled the lodge room at the dedication exercises of the new $60,000 club home, which followed the lodge ritual. Deputy Exalted Ruler T.E. Daniels presided, assisted by grand lodge officials. Past Exalted Ruler A.C. Burgess proclaimed the new home dedicated, the keys being presented by Past Exalted Ruler L.B. Haskins. Past Exalted Ruler C.L. Reames delivered a fine address upon the principles of Elkdom, followed by an eloquent and symbolic address by I.E. Vining of the Ashland lodge. Tokens Received The new deputy exalted ruler, W.R. Logus, of Oregon City, presented the Medford lodge with a library lamp and a library rug as gifts from the Oregon City lodge. Exalted Ruler Applegate of Ashland presented a fine roll-top desk as a token of Ashland esteeem. An elaborate table lamp was presented by the Portland lodge. Telegrams of regret at not being present were read from Astoria, Baker, Vancouver and Eugene lodges, as well as from prominent Elks. The Elks orchestra, consisting of Professor Howell, Wilson Waite, L. Colvig, Don Colvig, Miss Florence Clark, Lou Roukes and C.E. Root, furnished music, Miss Florence Hazelrigg singing "Columbia." After the ceremony the lodge and visitors adjourned to the Natatorium hall "to chase the fleeting hours with flying feet." The hall was tastefully decorated in lodge colors, and exhibitions of fancy dancing filled the interims between the club waltzes. Portland Backward Southern Oregon lodges were well represented. Over a hundred members of Ashland lodge, with their ladies, headed by the Ashland band, attended the exercises. Klamath Falls had a delegation of 50, led by Exalted Ruler C.F. Stone. Roseburg also was well represented. Portland had one delegate. Other lodges were similarly represented. Altogether the celebration has been a decided success, nothing being overlooked to contribute to the enjoyment of the visiting antlered host.
