Comets streak past Phoenix CENTRAL POINT -- Crater unleashed its most potent offensive weapon on Phoenix in an abbreviated version of the Airport Chevrolet Shootout Tuesday at the Comets' gymnasium. The four-team boys basketball tournament was reduced to three because North Bend canceled due to dangerous road conditions. Fortunately for Crater, Matt Brown's shooting touch wasn't like the Rogue Valley weather. The sizzling Brown scored 25 points as Crater subdued stubborn Phoenix, 67-43, in the day's only varsity contest. Eagle Point plays Phoenix at 1 p.m. today, then the Eagles face the host Comets in the tournament's final game at 7 tonight. Brown was 12-of-19 from the field and scored 11 points in the third quarter as the Comets took control by outscoring Phoenix 22-11. "The game plan was to pound it inside on them because we were much taller," Crater coach Matt Meunier said. "They concentrated on taking that away so it allowed Matt some open looks. This was his best offensive game of the season. It's no real secret there, he's our scorer." The Comets took the early lead, but Phoenix made it interesting by pulling to within five points at halftime. "In the second quarter we got complacent," said Meunier. "We went through the motions and Phoenix kept competing." Crater got an additional boost from senior center Matt Harthun with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Chelsea Morgan recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Grizzlies improved to 5-2 on the season. ROGUE RIVER 51, GRANTS PASS 43 -- At Grants Pass, Rogue River built a 19-8 lead in the first period and held on for the win. It was an opening-round game in the Glide Tournament, which was moved due to weather. "We kind of got in a hole in the first half," Grants Pass coach Shaun Gross said. "We came back and had a really good third quarter." The Cavers pulled within three points, 46-43, in the fourth period but couldn't stop the Chieftains as they finished the game with a 5-0 run. "We put a little more pressure on them (in the second half)," Gross said. "But couldn't quite catch them in the fourth quaterer." Mindi Yost led Rogue River with 14 points and teammate Shae Wright added 12 points and had a team high eight rebounds. Alicia Pilcher was the Cavers top scorer recording 14 points.
