Phoenix squeaks past Hidden Valley GRANTS PASS Hidden Valley pitcher Scott Hyde had Phoenix baffled through six innings in Skyline Conference baseball at the All Sports Park Tuesday. Hyde limited the Pirates to a first-inning run and only four hits up to that point. But Phoenix exploded for six runs on seven hits in the final frame and escaped with a 7-4 victory. "It looked bleak," Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. "Hyde had pitched a very smart game. He has a good changeup and his breaking ball is tough. He can bring it and you have a hard time standing in there." Number five and six hitters Bobby Dawson and Jake Mahon opened the seventh inning for the ninth-ranked Pirates (5-3 overall, 3-0 Skyline) with singles between short and third. Brady Rhodes sacrifice bunt turned into a base hit when nobody covered first base. With the bases loaded Jason Wolferd delivered the big hit. Wolferd cracked a hit to the wall in the left-center field gap that cleared the bases. After Nathan Emerson flew out, Kyle Kaufman doubled home Wolferd from second. Landon Rhodes continued the rally with a single and went to second on the play. Travis Dunlaps single up the middle scored two more runs to complete the outburst. "In the seventh we knew someone would have to step up," said Hagler. "Our lineup doesnt have a real weak spot. Our kids battle pretty good. They did what they needed to do as far as putting the ball in play." Hidden Valley answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the bases loaded when Hyde flew out to end the game. Dunlap, who had two hits and four RBIs, also pitched a strong game. The senior didnt allow an earned run and struck out seven. "He got ahead of the hitters and mixed his pitches up pretty well," said Hagler. "They didnt hit a lot of balls hard." Mahon had two hits for the Pirates, while Tyler Mason and Calvin Schmidt each had a pair of hits for Hidden Valley. LAKEVIEW 7, ROGUE RIVER 4 At Lakeview, Colt Sweeney had a key RBI double in the fourth inning to spark the Honker attack as Lakeview withstood a torrid hitting performance by Josh Horn. Sweeneys double staked Lakeview (5-3, 2-1 Skyline) to a 3-2 lead that the Honkers never relinquished. Horn did his best to rally Rogue River, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two doubles. Nolan Yocum added two hits for Lakeview. Chris Bocchi tripled home two runs in the fifth, then Gary Wagner ended the game with an RBI single. T.J. Farley sparked the Vikings with two hits and four RBIs, while Wagner added two hits and two RBIs. HENLEY 9, NORTH VALLEY 5 At Klamath Falls, Justin Sullivan smacked a three-run homer in the fifth inning for North Valley but it wasnt enough as Henley held the Knights at bay. Sullivan went 3-for-4 to pace North Valley (3-3, 1-2 Skyline), while Scott Butterbaugh and Paul Mitchell each added two hits. Henley took advantage of two walks, two hits and an error to take a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Hornets added three runs in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead before Sullivans blast narrowed the gap. Scott Gelhardt had three hits to pace Henley.
