Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 19, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 19, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 19, 1915 Protests Lodged With County Court ASHLAND — Among the local protestant churches yesterday, protests were circulated against turning over the management of the county poor farm and hospital to the Sister of Charity, a matter of which is being brought to the attention of the county court. The protests took the form of actual signatures or a rising vote. There was practically unanimous sentiment against the plan as voiced by the church people. This opposition is not directed so much against the Catholic church as it is against the assumption of control by a religious organization over secular maters. These protests will be lodged with the county court at an early date, and will constitute a formidable objection to the contemplated plan.   Youth Accidentally Shoots Himself Frances Bennett, aged 17 years, a junior in the Medford high school, living with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Bennett, at Main and Qunice streets, was accidentally shot through the thigh Sunday evening about 10:30 o'clock, when a .22 Winchester rifle he was cleaning exploded, sending a bullet crashing through the limb between the femoral artery and the bone. Young Bennett did not know the gun was loaded. The bullet passed entirely through the fleshy part of the leg, narrowly missing the femoral artery. The shooting victim suffered from a heavy loss of blood, a hemorrhage being stopped with difficulty. Dr. Porter was called, and he dressed the wound. Bennett will be confined to his room for a few days. The cartridge was discharged when Bennett jammed the ramrod against the cap, holding the weapon pointed toward him. No serious results will follow the accident, Mr. Bennett, the father, is in Eugene attending to business matters, and has been notified.
