Hornets close in on Skyline title KLAMATH FALLS Taking another step toward the Skyline Conference championship, No. 3-ranked Henley disposed of Phoenix, 5-3, on Tuesday. The Hornets (19-3 overall, 16-2 Skyline) did the bulk of their damage with a three-run third inning against Pirates starter Brady Rhodes, who gave up four earned runs, allowed nine hits, struck out four and walked four in a complete-game effort. "I knew facing Rhodes would present some problems for our team," said first-year Henley head coach Joe Tacchini. "So I think scoring those three runs early to take control of the game really helped us." Hornets starter Tim Kinzie (3-1) worked through control problems to earn the victory on six innings of one-run pitching. Kinzie walked five, gave up four hits and struck out three. Facing a 5-1 deficit, Phoenix made it interesting with a two-run seventh off Lloyd Wright but couldnt manage anything more. Henleys Kirk Cunningham and the Pirates Kevin Hudnall were the lone batters to smack two hits in the game. "I think weve played pretty good at times," Tacchini said in sizing up the Hornets postseason prospects. "We still have some things we can get better at. ... Id like to see us swing the bats better heading into the playoffs."
