North Eugene ekes past South girls South Medford dominated most of the action, but North Eugene capitalized on a defensive lapse to score the game's only goal in non-conference girls soccer Saturday at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. Despite the loss, South Medford coach Buzz Thielemann was pleased with his team's performance. "Sometimes you do everything right, but you still don't win," said Thielemann. "I think the girls played great." The Panthers (4-2-1) outshot the Highlanders 17-3 as the teams played a scoreless first half. For the game, South accumulated a 37-13 advantage in shots on goal. Thielemann said North Eugene senior goalkeeper Mollie Williams' fine play was a key reason for the shutout. A highlanders direct kick from outside the penalty box 33 minutes into the second half set up the winning score. Sophomore midfielder Cassey Bodenstab received the kick, then booted the pass into the net from 15 yards. "We were slow to establish our defense," said Thielemann. "They did a quick kick. We had a lapse. We need to be prepared for quick plays like that." Center midfielders Heidi Meador and Colleen Salisbury helped the Panthers control much of the play with crisp ball movement, and sophomore forward Amber Stevens, up from the junior varsity, provided energy on offense. CRATER 8, MAZAMA 1 - At Klamath Falls, Sarah LaFontaine scored four goals to lead Crater in the non-conference match. LaFontaine has 14 goals in six games for the Comets (4-2). After Stacy Wagner put Mazama on the board four minutes into the contest, LaFontaine scored on assists from Katie Doshier and Kassidy Reina for a 2-1 halftime lead. Crater scored three goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to win going away. Reina, who had been idled by hip and back ailments, scored on an assist from Jessica LaFontaine in her first match; Sarah LaFontaine scored unassisted; then Reina assisted on a Courtney Ratty goal. Reina, Stacy Shaw and Sarah LaFontaine all added unassisted goals. CHURCHILL 4, ASHLAND 0 - At Ashland, Churchill's speed proved too much for Ashland as the Grizzlies suffered their first loss of the season in the non-league match at North Mountain Park. The Lancers led 3-0 at halftime. Ashland (2-1-2) received good performances from senior captain Darby Fallon at stopper and junior forward Aurora Dolan. EAGLE POINT 1, MARSHFIELD 1 - At Coos Bay, Eagle Point's Terra Jackson scored the game-tying goal with three minutes remaining in the non-conference match. Jackson knocked a direct kick from 31 yards into the net over the head of Marshfield goalie Brooke Adams. The Pirates (4-0-1) led at halftime 1-0. Marshfield's Bri Badd took advantage of a defensive breakdown to score four minutes into the game. Eagle Point (5-1-1) started slowly against the previously unbeaten, untied Pirates, but the Eagles took control in the second half. Eagle Point outshot Marshfield, 14-5. Boys ASHLAND 3, CHURCHILL 0 - At Eugene, Jesse Hodges scored one goal and assisted on another as Ashland broke a scoreless first-half tie. Hodges opened the scoring nine minutes into the second half off an assist from Nate Orf. Fletcher Beadoin made a dash through the Lancer defense before getting taken down in the box and the Grizzlies were awarded a penalty kick. Matt Sharp converted to give Ashland a 2-0 lead. Hodges assisted on the final goal by Gabe Mason. Ashland outshot Churchill, 17-5. Junior goalkeeper Josh Dunn registered the shutout for the unbeaten Grizzlies (5-0). Dunn has not surrendered a goal all season. EAGLE POINT 1, MARSHFIELD 1 - At Eagle Point, the Eagles ended their non-conference slate with a hard-earned tie. The Eagles (2-2-2 overall) got a 52nd-minute goal from senior forward Casey Murdock off an assist from senior midfielder Eric Matteson. The Pirates had taken a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a breakaway goal by senior forward Edgar Roman. Eagle Point outshot Marshfield, 17-10, and got two critical saves from senior goalkeeper Thomas Ussary.
