PREP WRESTLING Eagle Point wrestlers churn past Cavemen EAGLE POINT -- Sweat popped up on the brow of Eagle Point wrestling coach Bob Bergen midway through Thursday night's dual match against Grants Pass. The visiting Cavemen pulled off a couple of upsets in the lower weights and built a 16-10 lead when defending state champion Jeremy Conner pinned the Eagles' Darek Smith at 140 pounds. But Bergen could breath a little easier once his middle weight grapplers got down to business. The end result was a 43-22 Eagle Point victory that kept the Eagles unbeaten in dual meet action. "We knew this would be a tough match and it certainly was that," said Bergen, whose Eagles ran their Southern Oregon Conference dual meet record to 4-0 and their overall mark to 10-0. "Grants Pass has some tough kids. A lot of the matches were close." The turning point came in the middle weights when EP's Matt Bray took just 32 seconds to pin Billy Fish at 145 pounds. The Eagles' Jamie Mannenbach followed with a decisive 13-0 victory over Roy Blower at 152, Brett Thomas pinned Robert Costa at 160 and Evan Pogue squeaked out a 5-4 victory over Justin Klatt at 171. Suddenly, the Eagles had a 31-16 lead, and GP never recovered. "Our middle weights really stepped it up," Bergen said. "We got two falls and a major decision from Bray, Mannenbach and Thomas. Those were some big points at a critical time." Carlos Alvarez and Blake Cam finished with pins in the final two matches for the Eagles. "We don't have any superstars, but these kids compete hard and keep getting the job done," Bergen said. "And when one kid has a bad night someone steps up and has a good night. That's how you keep winning." TEAM SCORE --Eagle Point 43, Grants Pass 22. 103 --Joey Rossknecht, GP, d. Morgan Edenstrom, 6-4; 112 --John Gallo, EP, d. Mike Martin, 8-0; 119 --Lance Walters, GP, d.
