But community members are having a hard time deciding on a location. Ted Stark, upper Rogue regional manager for Jackson County Library Services, is responsible for guiding five of the 14 new or refurbished libraries to completion — Eagle Point, White City, Shady Cove, Prospect and Butte Falls. Stark said some Butte Falls residents want the new library to remain at the current location despite a pending lease termination from the city. Advertisement The 1,000-square-foot Depot Building library is adjacent to the town’s museum and has housed the town’s books for more than 10 years, Stark said. Stark said the Friends of the Butte Falls Library and other community members want to see the former restaurant remodeled instead of building a new library on a proposed site on the east side of the town square. "The city has been leasing the (library) building to us for about $1 a year," Stark said. "The original plan was to expand the Depot Building and make it larger and more accommodating. "Since then, the city has decided they need a new City Hall and we’ve been notified we’re being evicted." Mayor Steve Harvey said the Friends group and other community members took part in the decision-making process nine months ago. Harvey said the city needs a new location for its offices and that other city-owned buildings were offered in exchange for the Depot Building, but they were refused. "We have to look at things fiscally," said Harvey. "We are out of room at City Hall, so we need to either sell the building and buy another one for the city or move into this building." Deputy County Administrator Dave Kanner, project manager on the Butte Falls library, said the $32,500 purchase price for new site has been approved by Jackson County commissioners. Kanner said he felt it would be easier to build a new library on the new site, near the Assembly of God Church, rather than remodel the older building. But, he added, the ultimate decision was for the City Council and the community. ‘We’re waiting for the community of Butte Falls to make up its mind," said Kanner. "Once that happens, I guess we’ll move forward." The Butte Falls library design team is still seeking suggestions, recommendations and ideas regarding the project. Comments should be sent by Aug. 15 to Butte Falls Friends of the Library, P.O. Box 203, Butte Falls, OR 97522 or deposited in the suggestion box at the current library.
