Sunseri, Erholtz win Mt. Ashland Hill Climb titles By Mail Tribune Staff Jun 08, 2019 09:36 PM A A 22 View all photos ASHLAND — A man from California and woman from Idaho took top honors Saturday in the Mt. Ashland Hill Climb, a grueling 13.3-mile race that begins in Lithia Park and ends near the summit of Mount Ashland. The Hill Climb returned for the first time in two years and moved up from its usual August race date after being canceled due to smoke last year. Michelino Sunseri of Kings Beach, Calif., was the top men’s placer after crossing the finish line in 1 hour, 36 minutes, 15 seconds, to best men’s runner-up Brett Hornig of Ashland (1:40:10). Blake Zufall of Redding placed third in 1:40:18 and Devin Vanscoy of Eugene fourth (1:43:59). Brandy Erholtz of McCall, Idaho was the first woman to finish, breaking the tape in 2:02:35 to beat runner-up Natalie Chirgwin of Ashland by 17 minutes (2:19:35). Stacie Truitt of Roseburg finished third in 2:19:38 and Iryna Yavorska of Eugene fourth in 2:29:33. The event is billed as one of the largest vertical climbs in the country, with a total elevation gain of 5,600 feet — more than a mile. MT.
