Sells for $23. While Troon's emphasis is on making reserve wines and good blends, not all carry high-end prices. Jeanie in the Bottle, a rose, is on many local supermarket shelves, often at around $10. Other wines that have been bottled but won't be released until September are: 2003 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2004 LTD Reserve I blend two-thirds cabernet franc and the rest cabernet sauvignon. Each will sell for about $30. 2004 Zinfandel, a follow-up to the award-winning 2002 that sold out despite a retail of $100. Martin says the price on this one will be closer to $50-$60. The point of the $100 tariff on the first one was "to make a statement." A new Jeanie in the Bottle rose and a Druid's Fluid blend zinfandel, syrah, merlot and cabernet sauvignon are due out this month. During a recent visit, I also tasted several wines currently in barrels: Advertisement 2004 Meritage merlot, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc made with grapes from vines that are 27 to 30 years old. Martin says this is expected to be a "flagship" wine for Troon and will sell for around $35. They'll bottle it in December and release it next summer. A Vertical Cabernet Sauvignon made from four different vintages of Troon Cabernet — 2002-2005. Each was aged separately, and now they've been blended. They have a most interesting flavor. This is intended to be an $80 wine. 2005 Port made of tempranillo and dolcetto. I found this one delicious and preferred it over the 2003 release. THE APPLEGATE VALLEY has become quite a wine district. Besides Troon, you can visit tasting rooms at Valley View, Longsword, Fiasco Winery at Jacksonville Vineyards, Devitt, John Michael Champagne Cellars, The Academy by appointment only, Bridgeview, Wooldridge Creek and Rosella's. ALSO SAMPLED RECENTLY: Three wines from Wild Horse, located in California's central coast area, with vineyards around Paso Robles and in northern Santa Barbara County. By far the best is the 2004 Central Coast Chardonnay — an outstanding wine. Retail is $20. I also like the 2003 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, another $20 wine. Its flavor achieves good balance, not overly heavy. I was less impressed by the 2004 Central Coast Pinot Noir $25, tangy but otherwise light and ordinary.
