Convicted murderer arrested again Toliver Ronald Eugene Jr. Wednesday Jan 25, 2017 at 4:02 PM Jan 25, 2017 at 4:02 PM By Chris Bristol Grants Pass Daily Courier Ronald Eugene Toliver Jr., who once fatally stabbed a man who caught him stealing his car, has been caught with a knife again. Also a sawed-off shotgun. Toliver, 42, was arraigned Tuesday in Josephine County Circuit Court on drug and weapons charges after he was caught with a butterfly knife and a sawed-off shotgun in the Rogue River Highway area two weeks ago. Grants Pass police said Toliver was spotted lurking in the dark in a driveway on Sunset Way late the night of Jan. 13, and then tried to walk away when an officer responding to a trespassing complaint challenged him. After repeatedly lying about his name, officers eventually determined they were dealing with Toliver, who spent 13 years in prison for the 1995 murder of 34-year-old Mitch Rieder. Toliver told officers he lied about his name because he had a warrant for his arrest. Nearby officers found a loaded 12-gauge, sawed-off shotgun that Toliver claimed he had been trying to buy. The serial number had been scratched off. Officers also found a butterfly knife in Toliver's coat pocket as well as a variety of drugs: Xanax, hallucinogenic mushrooms, methamphetamine and heroin. As a convicted felon, Toliver can't possess knives or guns. Toliver fatally stabbed Rieder early the morning of Jan. 3, 1995, after Rieder, a married stonecutter, caught him trying to steal his yellow 1969 Volkswagen Beetle in the Redwood Avenue area. The slaying was the first of four homicides that month in Josephine County. Sentenced to 15 years in prison, Toliver served 13 before he was released in 2008. Since then, he has been in and out of jail several times for drug dealing and weapons violations. In 2014, after his last arrest, he was sentenced to three years in prison. That arrest occurred after officers investigating a burglary contacted him outside the downtown 7-Eleven store and frisked him. During the pat-down, officers relieved him of two daggers and a large "Rambo-style" knife, according to court records. In his backpack they found a .32-caliber revolver, two digital scales, a large quantity of heroin in a cigar box and $500 in various denominations. After that arrest, he complained to police, "There's nothing else I can do. I'm just trying to make it." He was released in April.
