As I was squishing the pesky things, I noticed the strangest smell. It actually smelled like Raid. Could these ants have already been poisoned by someone before I killed them? -- Lynne S., Rogue River Not likely, Lynne. According to experts at Terminex, your bathroom was likely infested with odorous house ants. This particular species of ants are brown and about 1/8­­­""inch long. If crushed, the workers give off a rotten coconut odor, hence their name. Apparently, that odor also smells like Raid, right? They are common from California to Washington and are the most common pest ant in the mid-south region of Arkansas and West Tennessee. They may be encountered occasionally throughout the Midwestern United States. Like carpenter ants and other species, these smelly ants may develop huge colonies containing thousands of workers and numerous queens. Advertisement Nests can be outdoors under items on the ground, within landscape mulch, beneath loose bark on trees, under ground cover, in potted plants and within piles of items, such as lumber, firewood, or bricks. Or they may be established inside homes in walls, beneath carpeting and in other suitable spaces. Experts say the key to controlling these pests is to find the colonies and subcolonies and treat them directly. Regular inspections and service are necessary to find and treat new colonies as they move in from neighboring properties. Barring hiring a professional, to start try that Terro ant bait. They should dig right in and then, if all goes well, mysteriously disappear after a day or two. And be prepared to do battle on a regular basis.
