Do you have to signal when entering and exiting a roundabout? Thanks for setting me straight. — Brent O., by email We suppose we'll be setting you straight, Brent, but in a bit of a circular way. We get to give you two answers, no and yes. No, there is nothing in the law that requires you to signal when you enter a roundabout, because you are remaining on the same street and have no legal option except to follow your travel lane into the circle. Yes, you are required by law (ORS 811.400) to signal when you exit the roundabout, because at that point you do have two options. Under the heading of "Failure to use appropriate signal for turn, lane change, stop or exit from roundabout," the statute reads, in part, "A person commits the offense of failure to use an appropriate signal for a turn, lane change or stop or for an exit from a roundabout if the person does not make the appropriate signal ... by use of signal lamps or hand signals and the person is operating a vehicle that is: (a) Turning, changing lanes, stopping or suddenly decelerating; or (b) Exiting from any position within a roundabout. We're not sure all roundabouts — Highland at Siskiyou in Medford, for instance — are well-suited to signaling since the distance between entrances and exits are so short, but the law does require it.
