TOP 20 ROUNDUP After layoff, Wisconsin knocks off Cal Comment By The Associated Press MailTribune.com By The Associated Press Posted Dec. 23, 2014 @ 12:01 am By The Associated Press Posted Dec. 23, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News BERKELEY, Calif. — Nigel Hayes had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 6 Wisconsin returned from a nine-day break to beat California 68-56 on Monday night. Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky added 14 points apiece in the first game for the Badgers (11-1) since beating Nicholls State 86-43 on Dec. 13. Tyrone Wallace scored 17 points and Jordan Mathews added 15 for the Golden Bears (10-2), who had their seven-game winning streak snapped. Cal had been off to its best start in 55 years under first-year coach Cuonzo Martin, with the only previous loss coming in New York against nationally ranked Texas. Wisconsin was a bit sluggish early but built a double-digit lead late in the first half and was never really threatened the rest of the way. TEMPLE 77, NO. 10 KANSAS 52: At Philadelphia, Will Cummings scored 19 points, Quenton DeCosey had 18 and Temple stunned Kansas with a rout that snapped the Jayhawks’ eight-game winning streak. Jesse Morgan added 17 points and keyed a dominant second-half performance from the Owls, who were swallowed up after the game by a sea of Temple (8-4) fans rushing the court at the Wells Fargo Center, home of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. Frank Mason III scored 20 points for Kansas (9-2), which shot 32.7 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers. NO. 11 WICHITA STATE 80, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 53: At Honolulu, Darius Carter was a force inside with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Wichita State had no trouble with Loyola Marymount in the quarterfinals of the Diamond Head Classic. The Shockers (9-1) used 14-0 runs early in the first and second periods to seize control of a game that was a mismatch from the start. The Lions (3-7) lost their fifth straight. NO. 13 WASHINGTON 66, TULANE 57: At Seattle, Shawn Kemp Jr. scored 16 points, Nigel Williams-Goss added 14 and Washington remained undefeated by pulling away in the second half against Tulane. The Huskies improved to 11-0, matching the best start in Lorenzo Romar’s tenure as Washington’s coach. The Huskies also started 11-0 during the 2005-06 season. Washington committed a season-high 18 turnovers. NO. 16 NOTRE DAME 91, NORTHERN ILLINOIS 66: At South Bend, Ind., Pat Connaughton had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Notre Dame over Northern Illinois. Zach Auguste added 16 points, on 7-for-7 shooting, and eight rebounds for the Fighting Irish (12-1). Demetrius Jackson also scored 16, with five assists and four steals. NO. 17 ST. JOHN’S 66, LONG BEACH STATE 49: At New York, Chris Obekpa had 16 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead St. John’s over Long Beach State. The Red Storm (10-1) have won 10 of their first 11 games for the first time since 1990-91. That team went 23-9 and lost to No. 2 Duke in the Midwest Regional Final. NO. 18 WEST VIRGINIA 77, WOFFORD 44: At Morgantown, W.Va., Juwan Staten had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead West Virginia past Wofford. West Virginia (11-1) is off to its best start since opening 11-0 during the 2009-10 season, when it reached the Final Four. Elijah Macon and Jonathan Holton each added 11 points, and Jevon Carter scored 10 for the Mountaineers. NO. 19 OKLAHOMA 85, WEBER STATE 51: At Norman, Okla., Oklahoma set an NCAA Division I record by scoring 39 straight points in a rout of Weber State. The Sooners were led by Jordan Woodard and Ryan Spangler, who each scored 15 points. Oklahoma (8-3) broke the previous record for a scoring run against a Division I opponent of 37 points, set by Utah State vs. Idaho on Feb. 15, 2006. Oklahoma’s run turned a 10-4 lead into a 49-4 margin. The Sooners shot 68.8 percent from the field while building a 51-12 halftime lead.
