Adams agreed to accept the interim position while the city looks for a replacement for Paxton, who was its top non-elected official. Adams says she is considering applying for the position herself, but will stay until the city has a chance to review all applications and hire a new permanent employee even if she decides not to submit her own application. "I’m doing the priority things. I am paying accounts receivable and payroll to keep the office current," says Adams. "I’m mainly trying to maintain continuity for the city and also for whoever ends up here. I don’t want them to walk into a pile of past-due bills or have a bunch of people yelling at them." Paxton’s resignation came after a nearly two-hour executive session during the Sept. 9 City Council meeting. The resignation terminated the city’s relationship with him immediately. The city quickly posted advertisements for the permanent position. Adams says both Medford and Talent city recorders called her regarding Gold Hill’s opening. "Beverly Sandblast (Medford city recorder) called me and told me Gold Hill was looking for someone. I told her to let the mayor know I would be willing to fill in for sure, and to call me if he was interested. Mayor (Scott) Eilefson called me and here I am." Adams worked for the city of Brookings for 15 years, spending the last dozen as finance director. She lives in Medford and has worked for the accounting firm Moss Adams as its government audit coordinator as well as running her own health-care product marketing business for the past three years. Adams says she is working a flex-time schedule and trying to get acclimated to new accounting software while she considers her options and fulfills other commitments. "This is a neat little town. There is a lot of potential here," says Adams. Adams says Eilefson told her the deadline for applicants is Sept. 30. Sanne Specht is a free-lance writer living in Rogue River.
