Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 15, 2006 Hot free-throw shooting boosts Black Tornado SOC Roundup It may not have been the norm, but North Medford wasn’t complaining after sterling free-throw shooting led to a 73-68 Southern Oregon Conference boys basketball victory over visiting Eagle Point Tuesday. Point guard Mike Williams was 8-for-8 at the line in the fourth quarter, and the Black Tornado was 17 of 20 during the period in raising its record to 7-15, 4-8 SOC. "It’s been a little bit of a struggle, a little bit of a mystery," said North coach Tim Sam of his team’s foul shooting. "But it’s something we’ve been improving on throughout the year." The Tornado built a six-point lead in the first half and kept it in that vicinity the rest of the contest despite 26 points by Derek Grieve of Eagle Point (7-15, 2-10 SOC). "He was a handful for us," said Sam. "We threw three or four different guys at him, and none of them did a great job. He did a great job of getting to the basket on us. He can be very active and very difficult to defend." North answered with its own weapon in Josh Pecktol, who came off the bench and tallied a career-high 17 points. The 6-foot-1 freshman forward was 7 of 9 from the field, 3 of 3 at the line and added six rebounds and two steals. Advertisement "He played within himself and didn’t force anything," said Sam. "He got off good shots." Jordan Ellis had 15 points for North, Jason Slowey added 10 points and eight rebounds and Williams chipped in six assists. Shasta Bateman scored 14 and Mychal Williams 12 for the Eagles. EAGLE POINT (68) — Bateman 14, Williams 12, Nevin 2, Grieve 26, Krzyzanski 7, Owens 7, Harvey 0, Tomich 0, Novak 0.
