Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 6, 2005 Since We Asked: Royal Ave. paving was needed for detour use With huge construction jobs putting a choke-hold on traffic around McAndrews, Crater Lake Avenue, and Biddle Road on Monday of this week, who scheduled the re-paving of Royal Avenue at the same time? It created an even bigger traffic tie-up and forced many cars through the Providence parking lots. Could the Royal job not be done at a later time? — Joe B., Medford Yes, with the McAndrews Bridge project, McAndrews / Crater Lake project and various nearby construction and lane narrowing, driving in that part of Medford can be a true exercise in practicing patience. We asked Cory Crebbin, the public works director, and he said Royal Avenue will be part of the detour route during the closure of East McAndrews Road (part of the McAndrews / Crater Lake Avenue intersection project), set to begin today. Advertisement He said the city needed to repave Royal so it wouldn’t fall apart when the city started using it as a detour, because then it would be too late. And if Royal fell apart, they’d have to create a detour for the detour, we guess. Starting today, contractor LTM will close the west half of McAndrews at Crater Lake Avenue for 12 calendar days, then the east half for 12 calendar days. Crews and signs will direct traffic through nearby sidestreets. Drizzling rains are OK, but scheduling may change in case of long downpours. The project will replace what was a worn-out, rippled asphalt surface with more durable concrete, and will widen both streets to create double left-turn lanes on northbound Crater Lake Avenue and eastbound McAndrews Road.
