WHAT : Bailey began the season with a pair of high finishes in Chico before claiming his first-ever main victory at Southern Oregon Speedway on April 18. » Social News Being a self-employed truck driver sends Central Point’s Jesse Bailey up and down Interstate 5 delivering produce to Los Angeles. When the 28-year-old isn’t behind the wheel of his big rig — which is about three days a week — he’s got a hobby. For fun, Bailey drives some more. The 2005 Crater High graduate has shown great love and skill for modified racing, which puts him back in the driver’s seat during many weekends. “It’s the most competitive class out there,” he says. “It’s the most fun to watch. It’s pretty much what I always wanted to be in.” Bailey, who has been racing competitively since 2006, secured the modified main event victory and $1,000 paycheck at Southern Oregon Speedway on April 18. It was his first main triumph in any class. Prior to pursuing modified racing, he had competed in pro stock and dwarf cars. “I had some nights where I came close or made mistakes,” he says. “You go that long, and it does start to weigh in the back of your mind, wondering if it will happen. Once you get one it takes the pressure off.” Bailey began 2015 strong with fourth-place and sixth-place finishes during a two-day event in Chico, Calif., that featured 35 cars and a tricky track. Mechanical issues prevented him from racing at Cottage Grove and Yreka before everything came together for the meaningful win in White City. Albert Gill won the modified main last Saturday, but not without pressure from Bailey. Bailey attempted to pass numerous times and was side-by-side with Gill, but didn’t have quite enough to pull out in front. Bailey just purchased a new chassis from Eagle Point’s Bruce Rayburn. The upgrade will keep him off the track for a few weeks, but could be a game changer, he says. “The car I have was built in 2010 and has a lot of races on it,” says Bailey, who began racing modifieds in 2009 after receiving encouragement from brother-in-law and fellow driver Jon DeBenedetti. “It was running a little old.” The plan, Bailey says, is to race at least eight times at Southern Oregon Speedway, including the Lon Skinner Memorial. That event, set for Sept. 6, has a $5,000-to-win prize and $500-to-start incentive. “I feel like now we are going to get better every time we come out,” he says. Bailey played football and baseball at Crater and also raced some mini stock and go-kart for fun in high school. Bailey’s interest for racing grew because of his dad, Jim Bailey, and his cousin Tim Bailey. Bailey’s older sister Valerie also competed in go-karts and dwarf cars. Now Bailey and his wife Kandice have 6 ½-month-old Reid, who seems to be picking up on his dad’s pastime. “He already likes hanging out around race cars,” he says. “Kandice was pregnant last year and I think he could hear the sounds.” This much is certain: Bailey’s loved ones will be on his mind, in the truck and the race car.
