Mazama sweeps away Phoenix KLAMATH FALLS - A brutal non-conference schedule with the big boys of the Class 4A level left the Mazama baseball team thrilled to see Skyline Conference play begin. The Vikings, who managed a 1-4 record in non-conference play, scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to take an 8-7 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader sweep of Phoenix on Saturday in the conference-opener for both schools. Mazama (3-4, 2-0 Skyline) won the nightcap, 13-11. "I think our non-conference schedule helped prepare us," said Mazama coach Jeff Sturgeon, whose team played Crater, South Medford and Klamath Union before Saturday's conference-opener. "We were able to see a lot of tough pitching and that helped us because (Brady) Rhodes (of Phoenix) was a good one." The Pirates stormed from behind in the opener with six runs over the final two innings to take a 7-5 lead. Jason Wolford provided the big blow with a two-run double in the seventh. Rhodes pitched into the seventh for Phoenix and picked up the first out but was lifted after walking four straight batters. Brett Goble recorded out No. 2, but also walked in the tying run before Eric Brosterhous lined an 0-2 pitch into left field for the game-winning hit. Wolford and Eric Kessler each had two hits for Phoenix, while Dallas Hubble, Justin Nelson and Brosterhous led Mazama with two apiece. In Game 2, the Pirates raced out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, but the Vikings answered with six of their own in each of the next two innings. Phoenix pecked away at the lead but couldn't bring the tying run home. "It was a weird game," said Sturgeon. "It felt like it was back-and-forth the whole first part of the game. "We got that lead and they just kept plugging away and plugging away." Nathan Emerson had three hits for Phoenix and Kevin Hudnell, Wolford and Rhodes each added two. Mark Manfull and Nelson each had three hits and three RBIs for the Vikings.
