CENTRAL POINT Mae Richardson Elementary turns 50 Event celebrates anniversary with tours and memorabilia Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 11:50 AM Posted Apr. 14, 2015 at 11:50 AM » Social News Staff and students at Mae Richardson Elementary School in Central Point will celebrate their school’s 50th anniversary with a trip down memory lane. The school will host an open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, with student-led tours, refreshments and exhibits, including photos of its nine principals, class photos, a report card from 1965 and old yearbooks. Mae Richardson alumni, parents, former teachers and staff, and the rest of the community are invited to the reception held in the commons area of the school at 200 W. Pine St., Central Point. The school building was completed in February 1965 and dedicated later that spring. It featured 18 classrooms, a library, an administrative area and a multipurpose room, which was used as a cafeteria, music room, auditorium and gymnasium. Nearly 500 first- through fifth-grade students attended the school in its first year. The school was named in honor of Mae Beatrice Richardson, who retired in 1951 after 36 years as a teacher, including 24 years as a first-grade teacher in the Central Point School District. In 2002, the school was remodeled and expanded to include two additional classrooms and a media center. It currently serves 560 kindergarten through fifth-grade students.
