Ashland overwhelms Wilson in non-conference tilt ASHLAND - Ashland geared up for defense of the Southern Oregon Conference baseball championship with an 11-3 non-conference victory over Wilson Friday. The Grizzlies are 6-3 heading into the league-opener Tuesday, a doubleheader at undefeated Roseburg. "We've still got a couple of questions with pitching," said coach Doug Stover after the Grizzlies amassed seven runs in the first two innings. "We've been playing single games, and now we start conference play with doubleheaders." Against Wilson, Bill Rowe started, then was followed by Kyle Puderbaugh and Mike Allen, who is the Grizzlies' ace. After Allen, the No. 2 spot in the SOC rotation might be by committee, said Stover. Rowe got the win, giving up five hits and all three runs, which were earned, in four innings. He walked three and struck out five. It was at the plate where Rowe sparkled. The senior first baseman slugged an inside-the-park home run and a triple. He walked in his other two at-bats and tallied three runs and three RBIs. Rowe, who had gotten off to a slow start this spring, now is batting about .430. "Billy's hitting the ball real well now," said Stover. "He's seeing the ball. He played basketball, so that took something out of him in the preseason a little bit. He's one of those guys who has to get a couple hundred cuts in each week. He hits the ball on his own a lot, too." Rowe's triple came in the first inning and plated two runs after Charles Dotterrer singled and Torrance George reached on an error. Titus Weston squeezed home Rowe. The Grizzlies added four runs in the second, all coming across with two outs. Ryan Decker, Dotterrer and George all singled. Rowe walked and Allen reached on an error, bringing the final runs. Decker was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Dotterrer was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. NORTH MEDFORD 10, YREKA, CALIF. 0 - Beau Hovland pitched a one-hitter as fourth-ranked North Medford completed an unbeaten preseason with the win at Miles Field. Hovland allowed a double on the first pitch of the game to Nick Delafuente, then stymied Yreka the rest of the way with no strikeouts and three walks. Russ Vandel, who was 2-for-2, ripped a two-run single in the first inning to get the Black Tornado started. The hit scored Tyler Engle, who had walked, and Evan McArthur, who reached on a fielder's choice. In the sixth, Hovland and Robbie Folsom, who was 3-for-4, each had two-run singles, and Brett Timmerman ended the game on the 10-run rule with a bases-loaded single. J.C. CENTENNIAL 9, SOUTH MEDFORD 4 - At Peoria, Ariz., South Medford closed its excursion to Arizona with a 1-3-1 tournament record when its game with host Centennial High of Peoria, Ariz., was called due to a time limit in the fifth inning. Centennial opened a 9-0 lead before the Panthers (4-4-1) clawed back with three runs in the fourth. Blake St. Onge and Clint Rodreick each drew walks for South to start the rally, and Ryan Heil loaded the bases with two outs following an error. Ryan Norris and Dave Henneman each drew walks to bring in South's first two runs, with Jeremy Frantz capping the surge with an RBI single. South added its final run in the top of the fifth, with Heil driving in Andy Narus on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. GRANTS PASS 5-10, SOUTH ALBANY 3-0 - At Grants Pass, Dan Mecum belted a grand slam in the first game and Derrick Draper pitched a shutout in the second to lead Grants Pass to the non-conference sweep. The Cavemen are 6-2. Mecum's blast to straightaway center field came with two outs and erased a 2-0 lead for the Rebels. He also went the distance on the mound, scattering eight hits, fanning six and walking four. Grants Pass' Zach Ammaranthus was 2-for-3 with a double. In the five-inning Game 2, Draper gave up three hits and struck out six. He walked one and hit a batter. The Cavers' Matt Rettke was 3-for-3 with two of his three doubles on the day, two runs and two RBIs. Speedy Ortiz was 2-for-2 with three runs and two stolen bases. Skyline Baseball HENLEY 15-18, HIDDEN VALLEY 0-8 - At Klamath Falls, Henley turned the battle of last season's Skyline Conference co-champions into a rout - twice. In the first conference action of the season, the Hornets (5-1 overall) scored 13 third-inning runs in Game 1 and exploded for 12 runs over the fourth and fifth innings of Game 2 to finish off each end of the doubleheader in just five innings. Hidden Valley was held to three hits in the opener by Henley pitcher Bryn Card (2-0), who struck out six and walked none. The Mustangs pounced on a two-out error to rattle off eight unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning of Game 2, taking an 8-6 lead. But the Hornets, who dropped three one-run games to Hidden Valley last season to lose the seeding tiebreaker for the postseason, responded with five runs in the fourth and seven more in the fifth. Senior center fielder Brian Kinsman was one of many Henley hitting heroes, as he smashed a three-run home run in Game 1 and collected a total of four hits and five RBIs in the doubleheader. In the first game, Barry Parker went 3-for-3 for the Loggers (1-5), who were done in by an eight-run second inning in which UVC had four hits to go with three Butte Falls errors. In Game 2, Chris Copeland doubled to lead off the first for Butte Falls and scored on Parker's fielder's choice. Jed Rowden had the Loggers' only other hit.
