Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 5, 2006 Pet dog killed in Medford fire By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune Medford fire crews are still investigating the cause of a fire that ripped through a Plum Street duplex Saturday night. The blaze sparked at around 8:35 p.m. at 1019 Plum Street, Medford Fire Department deputy chief Larry Anderson said. Crews arrived at the duplex within four minutes. By the time they arrived, one-half of the two-unit duplex was heavily involved. The second unit was not damaged, Anderson said. Fifteen firefighters had the blaze under control in around 10 minutes. No firefighters were injured. One resident was hospitalized for an asthma attack brought on by smoke, Anderson said. Advertisement Rex Ledbetter, who lives near the duplex, was awoken by a friend who told him the residence was on fire. Ledbetter said he grabbed a garden hose and attempted to put out the flames. He also tried to enter the house to save the occupant’s dog, but was soon overwhelmed by smoke and flames. "I tried to get in there to get that dog, man, but there was already flames eating up the ceiling," Ledbetter said. The dog died before fire crews arrived. Ledbetter, obviously shaken by his experience, pulled on a cigarette outside the still-smoking duplex. "It singed my hair," he added. "You can only do so much with a garden hose." Anderson said fire crews would remain at the residence well into the night. They took a short break at around 9:30 p.m. before climbing on the duplex’s roof to put out any hotspots remaining in the attic. Medford police blocked off most of Plum Street as fire crews battled the flames. Many residents of the street lined the sidewalks, watching as fire crews "mopped up" the area after the flames were extinguished. Anderson said that the cause would be determined after an investigator arrived at the scene. Medford fire was assisted at the scene by Mercy Flights ambulance crews.
