MEDFORD Officials hope for more appealing design for police station parking garage Officials want more appealing design for police station parking garage Comment By Damian Mann Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Jun. 29, 2015 at 5:20 PM Updated Jun 30, 2015 at 4:08 AM By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Jun. 29, 2015 at 5:20 PM Updated Jun 30, 2015 at 4:08 AM » Social News Medford officials hope the budget for a new police station will allow for an improved parking garage design that could cost up to $850,000 but would provide a better civic presence. “It’s going to be a long-standing fixture in downtown Medford, and we want it to be appealing,” Deputy police Chief Randy Sparacino said. “We want it to be representative of the police department and to be something the community could be proud of.” The city has budgeted $21 million to build the new police station and adjoining four-story parking garage. Adroit Construction Co. of Ashland has already started building the footings for the project. The new police headquarters going up at the corner of Ivy and 10th streets will contain 46,500 square feet, about three times the size of the current facility in City Hall. Sparacino said the city has been wrestling with a more appealing design for the parking garage portion of the police station without breaking the budget. So far, the project appears to be within budget, Sparacino said. The city likely won’t know until sometime later this summer if it has enough money to add all the masonry features to the parking garage to make it more appealing than the current design. The city is now focused on two possible designs for the parking structure, one with a minimal amount of masonry on the bottom level and the other with more masonry added to the top floor. On both designs the masonry is a light-colored brick. The police station itself features masonry, metal and lots of glass. Sparacino said the goal is to come up with a final design for the façade on the parking structure that will fit in with the design of the police station. Greg McKown, police station project manager for the city, said the option that includes full brick and detailed metal screening for the parking garage would cost about $850,000 more than a simple chain-link fence for security. McKown said the city will seek subcontractor bids for the façade work sometime in mid-July along with proposals for interior work and finishes, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. The first phase of the project involves excavation, concrete, under-slab utilities, structural steel and deck metals, steel erection and elevators, McKown said. A final design for the parking garage will have to be approved by the City Council. Councilor Tim Jackle said city officials hope the extra masonry work will come in at far less than $850,000, but he said he won’t know for sure until it is bid out at a later date. Before construction began the council approved a design for the parking garage that had relatively plain features, Jackle said. At the time, councilors hoped the design could be upgraded to avoid creating a relatively featureless parking structure, particularly if it looked similar to the parking structure on the new Jackson County health services building next door. “My goal is to get some masonry on there that breaks up the mass of the structure,” Jackle said.
