St. Vincent de Paul Society of Medford is holding its annual giveaway of school supplies for students in need from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 10-13, at 2424 N. Pacific Highway, Medford. This year the giveaway is under the direction of Alice Cushman, a longtime volunteer who took over for former director Bob Christian. Cushman said the organization has purchased about $75,000 worth of school supplies, which it estimates will be enough to provide backpacks of supplies for 4,000 students. The entirely volunteer-run operation is funded primarily by the proceeds from St. Vincent de Paul stores and, according to Cushman, takes almost all the time in between each year to organize. “It’s been a huge learning process, but we could not have had a better group of people,” Cushman said. The supply giveaway is in collaboration with the Maslow Project, which provides resources for homeless children in Jackson County. The Maslow project is putting on its own giveaway later in the month, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 25-26, at 500 Monroe St., Medford. Development Director Karen Phillips recommends that families in need visit the St. Vincent de Paul event first, but if they miss it, to contact the Maslow Project ahead of time to ensure they’ll secure the supplies they need. Any inquiries can be directed to Megan Suess via [email protected] . The Maslow Project also will be giving away supplies at the Ashland Community Family Fest from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at the Ashland Community Resource Center, 570B Clover Lane, Ashland. Families attending any of the events are asked to bring proof of need in the form of Oregon Health Plan or Oregon Trail cards, as well as student identification cards. St. Vincent de Paul also invites any community member interested in volunteering. These giveaways occur every year because, as both Phillips and Cushman said, there continues to be a need for them. "Back to school is a pretty exciting time for kids and we want make sure that kids have a chance to walk in that first day and feel good," Phillips said.
