This is a move in the right direction and will be hailed with joy by the long-suffering people of the valley, whose household effects and merchandise stocks have been annually soiled and frequently ruined by clouds of soot that submerge them on frosty spring mornings. If there ever was a public nuisance it is this nasty method of frost control. It is hard on the orchardist, hard on the orchard and hard on the inoffensive populace, who have cheerfully put up with it, in the hope of aiding the fruitgrower. Whether or not the burning of crude oil damages the trees is a question the orchardist himself can best answer. Certain it is that the heavy coat of carbon, closing the breathing pores of the tree, is neither a stimulant nor a fertilizer, and the effect must be injurious when there are no spring rains to cleanse the trees. And every drop of the oil spilled ruins the productivity of the ground it falls upon. There are certainly other methods for raising the temperature in the orchards than that of the smudge pot, and they should be given a trial. The solution of the problem may not be found offhand, but sooner work is begun upon it the quicker results will be obtained — and now is the time to begin. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The Royal Neighbors and Modern Woodmen will hold a session of "district school" in the K. of P. hall Friday evening, March 17. Each one is expected to dress as a school pupil of olden times and bring a dinner pail and lunch. Coffee will be served by the directors. Those who fail to dress the part will be fined a few cents. The teacher expects each pupil to be on time. School will open at 8 o'clock p.m. A literary program and spelling bee will be given. Come and be a kid once more. Bring a friend.
