Prep basketball Redmond, fouls foil Tornado REDMOND -- North Medford got into early foul trouble and struggled down the stretch as the Black Tornado lost to Redmond 64-53 in non-league boys basketball on Thursday night. Redmond's Reagan Gilbertson tossed in 25 points to lead all scorers. Senior point guard Jeff Zimmer scored 24 to lead the Tornado, which fell to 3-2 on the season. Six North Medford players had two fouls in the first half and senior post Travis Hinkle fouled out midway through the fourth period. Hinkle, one of North's leading scorers on the season, finished with just three points. "We didn't handle the conditions very well tonight," North Medford coach Gene Quilhaugh said. "The game was called in a certain way and we kept fouling." Even so, Zimmer's 3-point basket at the halftime buzzer gave the Tornado a 26-24 lead at the break. "I thought that basket breathed some life into us but we couldn't keep it going in the second half and especially the fourth quarter," Quilhaugh said. "We weren't able to sustain much of anything offensively in the last four minutes of the game. "I'm used to watching our kids rally but we didn't have the mental toughness tonight to make that happen." Redmond shot 53 percent from the field (19 of 36) and 78 percent from the free throw line (25 of 32). Once the host Panthers built a lead in the fourth period, they spread the floor and got some back-door baskets. North Medford's next game is Dec. 28 against Oregon City in the Medford holiday tournament.
