The slender right-handed pitcher tossed a one-hitter and was supported with a 15-hit attack as the Mavericks posted an 8-0 victory over Jackson Hole, Wyo., in the eight-team double-elimination tournament at Thorn-Rider Park. North Medford (45-10-1) plays Bitterroot, Mont., a 14-2 winner over Alaska, at either 11:30 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. today. The 11„2-week rest between winning the Oregon state tournament proved beneficial as Jones struck out nine and walked one to improve to 10-2 on the season. The only hit for Jackson Hole came on a one-out single in the fifth inning by Colter Huhn. Advertisement "It was the best I've seen (Jones) locate pitches all year," North Medford coach Brett Wolfe said. "He moved the ball in and out and changed speeds. It was hard for batters to sit on pitches. He made them uncomfortable in the box." Wolfe said Jones' pitching performance took off some of the pressure in a tournament opener. "With him on the hill, it set the tone of the game and let us settle in offensively," said Wolfe. "He gave us that opportunity." North Medford staked Jones to all the runs he would need with a two-run rally in the second inning. Shea Bedortha opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on a ground out. Blake Mitchell hit a dribbler off the end of the bat down the third base line. Jackson Hole third baseman Grant Smith's throw to first went wid and down the right-field line as Bedortha scored and Mitchell ended up on third. Matt Maurer followed with a RBI double. "If you get the lead the kids can settle in," said Wolfe. "We wanted to jump ahead and take the pressure off. When you're behind it takes lot of the game away." In the third, back-to-back doubles by Bedortha and Colin Sowers put the Mavericks up 3-0. The Mavericks padded the lead with two more runs in the fourth on singles by Zack Earle and Aaron Marlia, walks to Jordon Bostwick and Jones and a sacrifice fly by Bedortha. "I was real happen with the way we swung the bat," said Wolfe. "Their coach said we put the bat on the ball better than anyone they faced all year." North Medford had six players collect two hits each — Marlia, Earle, Bostwick, Sowers, Maurer and Hayden Wolfe. Wolfe was somewhat concerned after a two-day trip in the team van, arriving in Sheridan late Wednesday night. "You're always a little bit leery," said the Mavericks coach. "When you're out of your home element and this far away, you don't know. But we played real sharp baseball and didn't seem to show any of those effects." Wolfe announced Bedortha (8-2) as the starting pitcher today against the Montana squad.
