Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 24, 2005 Friends rush to help family displaced by Monday afternoon fire By JACK MORAN Mail Tribune "Overwhelming" is how Meghan DeAngelo described the experience of losing her family’s west Medford home and all of their possessions in a Monday afternoon fire. A similar but far more positive feeling hit her on Tuesday, when friends and strangers who learned of the family’s predicament stepped forward to offer assistance. "I am amazed at how great and helpful everybody has been," DeAngelo said. "We are so appreciative. We need all the help we can get right now." Donations have begun streaming into Gervais Day Spa and Salon, where DeAngelo works as a hairdresser and makeup artist. Spa owner Lisa Hubbard offered to use the business, 111 N. Central Ave. in Medford, as a drop-off point for clothes and other items for the family. "They don’t have anything left," Hubbard said. Advertisement Additionally, friends have established the "DeAngelo House Fire Donation" account at Umpqua Bank. Contributions will be accepted at any bank branch. DeAngelo was cooking dinner just after 5 p.m. Monday when she smelled smoke inside her house in the 300 block of Clark Street. Upon seeing flames in a nearby bedroom, she picked up her 3½ - month-old daughter, Marley, and fled the residence. Firefighters were called to the scene but could not save the single-story house from being gutted by fire. DeAngelo said the only thing salvaged was a box of wedding photographs. "We were really shaken up," she said. "That was our first house, and we scrounged together everything we had to get it. It’s completely overwhelming right now." DeAngelo and her husband, Tony, moved into the house one week after their baby was born. Tony DeAngelo said Monday that the home is insured. Debi Bisbee, a Medford fire investigator, said the blaze started when an electrical outlet in a bedroom overheated and sparked nearby items. The house, which is believed to be a total loss, remained boarded up on Tuesday. For the time being, the DeAngelos will stay at a Medford inn. "We’re in a hotel right now, but we’re going to figure it out," said Meghan DeAngelo.
