Email Story to a Friend June 14, 2006 Affordability not an issue in shooting camp By DON HUNT Mail Tribune David Flood is attempting to build up a basketball shooting camp by putting one on for free. Well, almost free. For a $10 processing fee, youngsters in grades 1-12 can attend Flood’s camp next week at the Community Bible Church at 500 N. 10th St. in Central Point. The camp runs June 19-22 from 1- 3:30 p.m. Flood, 50, has hosted numerous camps over the past 15 years but has never put one on at such little cost. "Someone joked that you’d spend more putting your kid in daycare for 2½ hours," Flood says. Advertisement Flood was able to keep the cost of his shooting clinic to a minimum after getting donations from people going door-to-door. He’s also hoping to obtain additional scholarships from local businesses. "I have a vision for doing free camps for kids," Flood says. "I don’t want affordability to be an issue." Flood and his late father, Des Flood, began putting on camps in Medford in the early 1990s. Des Flood hosted camps in Southern California prior to that, tutoring several college and NBA players along the way. The elder Flood also served as a shooting instructor for the 1996 U.S. women’s Olympic team but died before the competition was held. The Floods designed a "natural shot" concept that stresses proper elbow alignment, proper position of the off hand and shooting hand, a strong wrist snap and backspin and a consistent follow through. "The foundation is the wrist snap and backspin," Flood says. "It doesn’t take very long to teach a 10-year-old to comfortably shoot 3-point baskets." Flood incorporates numerous shooting games into his camps. "Whether it’s karate, ballet or basketball, any instruction can be tedious and monotonous," Flood says. "The games alleviate that and they give kids a chance to put into practice what they’ve been working on." Flood also plans to put on camps the last week of July and August.
