Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 15, 2006 Two charged with theft Allegations of stealing from elderly family members have led to criminal charges against suspects in two separate Medford cases. Susan Claire Kamody, 53, and 20-year-old Matthew James Watson pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Jackson County Circuit Court to charges of first-degree aggravated theft. Kamody faces additional charges of first-degree criminal mistreatment. Both were indicted in February but have spent no time in jail. Kamody, of the 300 block of South Fourth Street, Central Point, allegedly stole about $31,000 from her 85-year-old mother, a Medford resident. Police said that while serving as her mother’s primary caregiver, Kamody used the elderly woman’s debit card and wrote checks to herself from her mother’s bank account. Another family member reported the suspected crime in May, said Medford police Lt. Tim George. Watson, who lives in the 200 block of Eagle Point’s Wren Ridge Drive, is suspected of draining his 75-year-old grandmother’s bank account of about $69,000 over a period of nine months, George said. Watson allegedly persuaded his grandmother to grant him access to the account a year and a half after she was diagnosed with a debilitating illness. George said the woman, also a Medford resident, was legally incapable of consenting to the agreement. The bank, Rogue Federal Credit Union, noticed the dramatic drop in funds and notified Senior and Disabled Services, who called police late last year. Medford police say they have seen a dramatic rise over recent years in theft from seniors and other vulnerable victims, such as the physically and mentally disabled.
