Senior outside hitter Kacee Jacobsen amassed a match-high 17 kills in 28 swings to help the No. 2-seeded Raiders (23-5) lock up one of the top draws in the semis. SOU plays the No. 2 team from Pool A, Carroll College, today at 10:30 a.m. The Raiders must win in the semifinals and in the 7 p.m. championship fray to earn a return trip to the 20-team NAIA Championships next month in San Diego. In addition to Jacobsen’s efforts, Southern muzzled the Bulldogs (23-12) with a 14-kill, three-block performance by junior middle Lindsey Aitchison and with a 12-kill outing by junior All- American Kristina Matchett. Junior all-star libero April Lowe accumulated 13 digs, while junior setter Dani Arlyn assisted 40 of the team’s 53 kills. Wrestling SOUTHERN OREGON 18, EMBRY RIDDLE 15 — At Ashland, junior All-American heavyweight Mike Whitehead registered a clutch pin in the next-to-last bout to lift third-ranked Southern Oregon to a victory over fifth-ranked Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at McNeal Pavilion. With the team score knotted at 12 through eight of 10 matches, Whitehead helped Southern rebound from last weekend’s 23-9 season-opening loss at sixth-ranked Menlo College by using a head- and-arm takedown maneuver to pin Aaron McKeever 1:24 into the 285-pound fray. Another Rogue Valley prep product, redshirt-freshman James Mannenbach of Eagle Point, staked the Raiders (1-1) to a 12-6 team margin with a 6-4 decision over freshman Jensen Jobe at 174 before the Eagles (0-1) rebounded to tie the score with victories by Jaime Hernandez (184) and Michael Augustson (197). All-Americans Nolan Harris (133) and Colin Murphy (141) provided Southern Oregon a 6-nil lead after the first two bouts. Southern Oregon improved to 8-0 in dual encounters with the Prescott, Ariz. flight school and avenged a four-point loss to the Eagles for the 2002 NAIA Western Regional tournament championship. Men’s Basketball ALBERTSON 87, SOUTHERN OREGON 76 — At Klamath Falls, Southern Oregon remained winless in Klamath Falls since 1999 by falling to 15th-ranked Albertson in the Cascade Conference Tip-Off Tournament. The Raiders (1-3) were forced into today’s 1 p.m. seventh-and eighth-place consolation game against either Northwest or Western Baptist after the Coyotes (7-3) shot 53-percent from the field and unleashed a 32-point, 10-rebound performance by forward Tom Perkes. SOU received 23 points from senior guard Zac Olson, while freshman forward Jared Abell tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds. Women’s Basketball CHICO STATE 83, SOUTHERN OREGON 74 — At Chico, Calif., Leah Rice led all scorers with 21 points as Chico State slipped past Southern Oregon in the opening round of the Coslet Classic. Rice connected on 9-of-14 shots and Marissa White added 16 points. Kara Magee-Arick came off the bench to lead the Raiders (1-2) with 18 points, while Ashley Nunley finished with 14 and Sara Marks 12 in the defeat.
