The film, “Batkid Begins,” is a chronicle of the Nov. 15, 2013, event where San Francisco was transformed into Gotham City thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and thousands of enthusiastic volunteers. To become Batman for a day was 5-year-old Miles' wish to the foundation, and they came through in spades. A bevy of actors stepped into the shoes of the Dark Knight’s gallery of rogues, the world followed along on Twitter and Miles became a hero who foiled several villainous plots. Miles has been a regular patient at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford. The filmmakers launched a campaign on the website Indiegogo on July 15. Their goal was to raise $100,000 to add more features and effects to film. By the time the campaign closed Tuesday, $109,630 had been donated by 946 contributors. “It was just really, really gratifying to see the whole spirit of the day is just living on,” said Liza Meak, one the documentary’s producers. While the fundraising campaign just concluded, Meak said most of the film has been shot and the editing process has already begun. The money raised will go toward creating animated sequences of Batkid’s exploits, getting licenses for using music in the film and paying for aerial shots of San Francisco. “What we want to do is do the best bells and whistles we can to make this documentary really exciting,” Meak said. A large portion of the film is expected to be finished by the one year anniversary of Batkid’s adventure on Nov. 15. After that, the filmmakers are hoping to show it at several film festivals in 2015. Meak said they have already applied to participate in several festivals, including the Sundance Film Festival. Meak, director Dana Nachman and the rest of the crew were inspired by Miles' turn in the spotlight. “I was pretty overwhelmed when it first happened. I just thought it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen,” said Meak, who works as a producer at a Bay Area NBC affiliate. As for what makes Batkid’s story so endearing? “I think a lot of it has to with it’s such a whimsical thing, it’s such a whimsical idea to allow a child to transform into a super hero. … People want to see the good and are really looking forward to seeing the good in different things.” Proceeds from the film’s ticket sales will go toward the Batkid Fund, which will support Bay Area charities, according to Meak.
