The woman, in her 30s, was standing on a wooden cover over the hand-dug well about 1:30 p.m. when it collapsed, Glendale fire Chief Roy Milburn said. The hypothermic woman was pulled out after 6 p.m. by Glendale firefighters and a steep-incline rescue team from Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Milburn said. Milburn said he was told the old well may have been 190 feet deep, about four feet wide, and the water level was 20 to 25 feet below the ground. It was a hand-dug well, nothing like today's wells that rarely exceed 8 inches wide, Milburn said. "She went completely under water, and the only thing she could get hold of was a plastic pipe," Milburn said. "It's a wonder she even lived." That she was found is another wonder. According to Glendale resident Marian Owens, who was also on the scene, the woman went to the property at 7760 Azalea Glen Road, where her boyfriend lives in a cabin, about three miles east of Glendale. She was going to clean the carpet and had no water, so she went to check for a well. After falling in, she spent four hours floating, until a resident of the house on the property happened to come home from an out-of-town job after 5 p.m. and heard her screaming, according to Owens. Milburn said he was lowered into the well in a harness, then attached the woman to a rope and got her out of the water. She was then pulled up, followed by Milburn. Said Owens: "She was one cold lady." Milburn said the same thing, adding, "For being in the water that long, she was in pretty good shape. She actually walked to the ambulance." She was taken to Asante Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass for treatment. The woman's identity was not available, but Owens said the woman told her she was from Grants Pass. According to Milburn, the well has been around for many years but he had not been aware of it. "It's from back in the day when they had community wells," he said. Milburn said he was extremely cold after spending 40 minutes in the water. He got emotional thinking about the rescue and the assistance from the steep-incline team from Douglas County. "I'll tell you what, that rescue team did a good job," he said. "The rescue was nothing short of amazing," Owens added.
