What is the reason behind selecting this type of paving? — Sue P., Medford Well, Sue, there’s no concrete answer (sorry, we just couldn’t resist the pun). The new pavers are brought to you by your friendly Medford Urban Renewal Agency. Director Kurt Olsen said basically it’s the same material used for solid concrete sidewalks, and he notices that leaves can stain the blocks — just as they can stain ordinary concrete — but the discoloration usually washes away. Other than that, he’s not familiar with a staining problem. He said the square pavers were selected because they can be popped up and replaced when underground utilities need to be accessed (whereas solid concrete sidewalks need to be broken up and patched). Also, they’re considered to be a classier sidewalk. Some of the leaf-stained pavers and sidewalks we’ve seen are kind of pretty, with impressions of the previous fall’s leaves.
